We appreciate your concern about the consumption of monosodium glutamate (MSG).  We realize that a small percentage of the population may be sensitive to this ingredient, having symptoms, which could include headache, numbness, palpitations and even neck and chest pain.  However, these symptoms rarely occur and are only temporary.  The FDA approved the use of MSG in foods in 1963.  MSG is the sodium salt of glutamic acid, one of the basic building blocks of protein found naturally present in many common foods which you probably already consume. Unknowingly, it has been used to intensify the flavor of foods for centuries.

It is our policy not to use MSG unless it is absolutely necessary to achieve the flavor profile our marketing department requires.  There is currently no known substitute to completely replace MSG.  Merely taking out MSG without reformulation decreases the flavor intensity of the product.  Nevertheless, we remain concerned about your sensitivity to this ingredient.  As a consequence, we have been actively engaged in a long-term research program to eliminate MSG from as many of our products as possible and we are delighted to report that we have been successful in getting out MSG in most of our products.  The following is an updated list of Utz branded products that do not contain any added MSG:
